Custom Brass & Glass Shower Doors: Our Process, Explained

An inside look at Heirloom's custom brass and glass shower doors, including design options, fabrication details, and how we work with homeowners and designers both locally and nationwide.

An overview for homeowners and designers considering a fully custom shower enclosure.

Why Brass & Glass?

Brass-framed shower doors bring warmth, depth, and craftsmanship to a space in a way that standard off-the-shelf enclosures simply can’t. Unlike chrome or stainless, brass ages gracefully, developing character over time while still feeling refined. When paired with clear glass, the result is a clean, tailored look that works equally well in traditional, transitional, and modern interiors.

Because each door is fabricated by hand, the design can be fully customized — from proportions and panel layouts to finish selection and hardware details.

A Fully Turnkey Process for Local Clients

For clients local to our Upstate South Carolina shop, we are able to offer a completely turnkey experience.

This includes:

On-site measuring to ensure absolute precision

Collaborative design and detailing

Custom fabrication of the brass frame in our shop

Professional installation by our team

This approach allows us to control every step of the process and ensures the finished product fits and functions exactly as intended.

Working With Out-of-State Clients

We regularly work with homeowners and designers all over the country, and while the process is slightly different, the level of craftsmanship remains the same.

For non-local projects:

Precise measurements are critical. Because we are not on site, all dimensions must be provided accurately and thoroughly. We will guide you on what measurements are needed and review them carefully before fabrication begins.

We fabricate the brass frame only. Each frame is built to your exact specifications in our shop.

Glass is sourced locally. We strongly recommend that clients work with a local glass company to supply and install the glass panels. Shipping glass long distances significantly increases the risk of damage and delays.

Shipping is coordinated by the client. Due to the size, weight, and value of these pieces, customers are required to use a preferred carrier and handle shipping logistics directly.

This process has proven to be the safest and most efficient way to deliver a custom product without compromising quality.

What We Need From You

To move forward with a brass and glass shower door project, especially for non-local clients, preparation is key.

Typically, we will request:

Final, field-verified measurements

Drawings or inspiration images (if available)

Finish preferences for the brass

Confirmation that wall surfaces and tile work are complete or accounted for

Because these doors are fully custom, fabrication cannot begin until all details are confirmed.

Design Considerations

Some things to think about as you plan your shower enclosure:

Finish: Brass can be polished, brushed, darkened, or sealed depending on the desired look and maintenance level.

Proportions: Slim, minimal frames versus heavier, more traditional profiles create very different visual effects.

Door Style: Hinged, pivot, or fixed-panel configurations should be considered early based on space and layout.

We are always happy to help think through these decisions during the design phase.

Every brass and glass shower door we create is made by hand with longevity in mind. These are not disposable fixtures — they are architectural elements meant to be lived with, appreciated, and enjoyed for years to come.

If you’re considering a brass and glass shower enclosure and want to understand the process before reaching out, we hope this guide serves as a helpful starting point. And when you’re ready, our team is always here to answer questions and discuss your project.

Reviving a Landmark: Heirloom’s Role in the Daniel Building Renovation

An icon of downtown Greenville, the Daniel Building has long stood as a symbol of strength, scale, and Southern progress. Now, this 1960s-era high-rise is undergoing a transformative renovation—one that will usher in a new era of design while honoring its historic roots. At The Heirloom Companies, we are honored to contribute a range of custom elements to this ambitious reimagining.

The Bar: Modern Craftsmanship at its Finest

Led by real estate investment group PENDIUM and architecture firm DP3, the renovation of the Daniel Building is bold in both vision and scale. Heirloom’s handcrafted features will appear throughout the revitalized space, blending timeless materials with modern sensibility.

Among the most eye-catching additions will be the custom walnut bar top, designed to anchor the building’s new amenity level. Framing the space above and behind the bar are arched brass details, brass bar racking, and an antique glass backsplash, all provided by Heirloom to create a refined yet contemporary aesthetic.

A Masterclass in Steel and Brass

Throughout the building, custom brass and steel tenant entrances will welcome guests with a sense of permanence and polish. Inside, thoughtfully placed wall trim adds depth and character, while two oversized custom light fixtures—suspended from the ceiling—make a striking architectural statement.

All of the pieces are large—both in scale and in ambition—designed not just to fill a space, but to define it.

We are proud to be a part of breathing new life into one of Greenville’s most recognizable landmarks. This project is a testament to what can be achieved when vision, craftsmanship, and community come together. The Daniel is set to open to the public in 2026.

Over the years, we've crafted countless custom fire screens, each designed to elevate the hearth while providing function and beauty. In this roundup, we're sharing some of our favorites - timeless pieces that showcase the artistry and craftsmanship at the heart of Heirloom.

Four Designs That Define Heirloom Craftsmanship

A fire screen is more than just a functional piece—it’s an opportunity to blend artistry with utility, bringing warmth and character to a space. At The Heirloom Companies, we take pride in designing and crafting fire screens that enhance their surroundings while standing as works of art in their own right. Here are four of our favorite designs, each showcasing a different style and approach to craftsmanship.

A Highland-Inspired Hearth in Cashiers, NC

Outdoor fireplaces demand durability without sacrificing beauty. This fire screen, designed for a mountain retreat in Cashiers, NC, achieves both. Built to withstand the elements while complementing the home’s rustic elegance, it features a simple yet refined ironwork design that allows the beauty of the home and the surrounding landscape to speak for itself.

Inside, we also crafted three additional fire screens, inspired by the homeowners’ love of Scotland’s cozy, wood-burning fireplaces. These pieces bring that same warmth and charm to their mountain retreat, blending function with timeless character.

The Amber Lewis Interiors Collaboration

When working alongside Amber Lewis Interiors, we knew the fire screen needed to embody her signature blend of timelessness and modernity. The result is a piece that feels both classic and contemporary, seamlessly fitting into a carefully curated space. Featuring clean lines and thoughtful detailing, this fire screen enhances the room’s aesthetic while maintaining its functional purpose.

The Nature-Inspired Lake Home Fire Screen

Bringing the outdoors in was the guiding inspiration behind this fire screen, designed for a serene lakefront home. Its intricate design draws from nature, with hand-forged details that echo branches, waves, or organic forms. A delicate bird is nestled among the branches, adding depth and storytelling to the piece. This fire screen doesn’t just frame the fire—it becomes a reflection of the surrounding landscape, making it a standout feature in the home.

A New Orleans-Inspired Fully Forged Fire Screen

For those who appreciate old-world craftsmanship, this Victorian-inspired fire screen is a true testament to traditional forging techniques. Every curve and detail was meticulously shaped by hand, resulting in an ornate yet timeless design. Inspired by the homeowners’ previous home in New Orleans, this fire screen echoes the intricate ironwork and architectural details found throughout the city. Rich with detail and historical charm, it embodies the artistry and skill of hand-forged ironwork at its finest.

Each of these fire screens showcases a different approach to design, from rugged outdoor durability to refined interior elegance. No matter the style, our goal remains the same: to craft pieces that elevate a space while standing the test of time.

Our Team's Top Jobs of 2024

In 2024, our team had the privilege of working on some truly standout projects. In this post, we're sharing our top jobs of the year - selected by the team for their creativity, craftsmanship, and overall impact, from intricate ironwork to stunning wood features.

From iconic sculptures in city parks to special residential pieces to sweeping stairs in commercial buildings, 2024 brought the kind of projects that craftsmen dream about. Big or small, every job presents its own unique challenge not only to execute the client’s vision, but to uphold the standards of quality and excellence that Heirloom has come to be famous for. In looking back, the projects that stand out most seem nearly impossible to narrow down, so we let our team decide instead. We asked five faces of Heirloom which jobs they loved most – whether it be because of the crafting process, the challenge the job presented, or simply the impact of the finished product – and here is what they said.

1. United Center Staircase – Zack Clardy

It’s no surprise that our Operations Specialist and resident commercial project expert chose the largest—and arguably most complex—staircase we’ve ever built as his top project of 2024.

United Community Bank (UCB), one of the Southeast’s largest full-service financial institutions, found its heart in Greenville, SC, when CEO Lynn Harton and his wife moved there in 2007. Their love for the community led UCB to relocate its corporate headquarters from Georgia to Greenville in 2021, making it the largest bank based in South Carolina. When planning a state-of-the-art headquarters, Harton envisioned a space that fostered connection, collaboration, and culture—one that embodied the spirit of Greenville itself.

To bring this vision to life, UCB partnered with McMillan Pazdan Smith to design a headquarters centered around connection. At its heart is a stunning three-story floating staircase—the largest we’ve ever crafted. This project pushed our team to new heights, demanding meticulous design, fabrication, and installation. The result? A striking centerpiece in UCB’s 200,000-square-foot headquarters—one of our most challenging yet rewarding builds.

The United Center was recently awarded the WELL Certification, which is the premier building standard focused on enhancing the health and well-being of employees in the facility. It is the very first project in South Carolina to receive this certification.

2. Residential Showstopper – Reuben Knights

Reuben Knights is one of the exceptional craftsmen on our team, dedicating every day to building and installing custom staircases. His expertise and attention to detail set a high standard for excellence. So when this client—whose own career also began in staircase construction and who shared the same commitment to quality—came to us, we knew their collaboration would result in something truly remarkable.

Building in the stunning landscape of Cashiers, North Carolina, the homeowners envisioned a mountain retreat that seamlessly blended with its natural surroundings. They wanted the staircase to be a true showstopper—the first thing guests noticed upon entering and captivating from every angle. Designing a piece that lived up to this vision was no small task, but through collaboration and thoughtful discussions, we crafted a concept that not only met but exceeded every expectation.

3. Reedy River Wetlands Structure – James Moseley

Of all the projects we’ve tackled, the Wetlands Structure on the Reedy River in Greenville, SC, may be the most intricate. Weighing approximately 3,000 pounds, this striking piece features hand-twisted wooden beams, each bolted at 324 different intersections. The complexity of its design presented a true challenge, making it no surprise that James Moseley, Co-Owner and Lead Designer at Heirloom, reflects on this project with immense pride and appreciation.

Located just outside Unity Park—Greenville’s newest and most vibrant gathering space—the Wetlands Structure stands as a testament to thoughtful craftsmanship and collaboration, and provides opportunities for park visitors to learn about and grow in appreciation for the beautiful habitat that surrounds them. We were honored to partner with the City of Greenville and Harper Construction to bring this vision to life.

4. Southern Living Idea House Range Hood – Meghan Carter

It may not be a multi-level commercial staircase or a hyper-complex geometrical structure, but our Project Coordinator Meghan has a special knack for finding the beauty in simplicity. That’s what she loves most about this range hood we crafted for the 2024 Southern Living Idea House – its understated nature. The way it seems to seamlessly melt into the wall, as if its part of it. At first, its a whisper; but if you take the time to really look, it can be quite loud.

In terms of fabrication, this range hood is actually much more than meets the eye. While the vast majority of our range hoods are crafted from metal, this hood was first crafted from wood. In order to achieve the desired design intent, we then covered the wood in plaster, adding some interesting and subtle texture, and then finished it with the brass elements.

“Every detail we created for this house is a testament to how Southern Living became so iconic,” says Meghan. “The pieces manage to somehow be timeless and fresh at the same time. A nod to classic coastal design that is unique, yet will never go out of style.”

5. Mountain-side Mansion Driveway Arch – Josh Moore

One of Heirloom’s two blacksmiths, Josh Moore, is an incredibly skilled craftsman. When asked about his favorite project from last year, his answer was immediate. Heirloom has had the privilege of working with a client in Asheville for the past five years, and they returned to us in early 2024 for a custom driveway archway to complement the gothic architecture of their home.

The arch was fully hand-forged from solid steel—a meticulous and time-consuming process. Not to mention the install, as the finished prodcut weighed over 2,000 pounds. But for Josh, the end result was more than worth the effort.

We are truly blessed to have a body of work that we are proud of and clients that appreciate our trade. But above all, we are blessed to have a talented team that takes pride in their craft and gives their all to every project they touch. 2024 was a year filled with unforgettable moments, but we know that our best days are the ones ahead of us.

In 1994, Allyn Moseley founded The Heirloom Companies with a singular focus: crafting custom staircases. What began in a modest barn outside the family home quickly became known for its dedication to craftsmanship and quality. That barn is long gone, but the heart of the business remains — still rooted in the same values that sparked its beginning.

Over the years, Heirloom has grown far beyond staircases, evolving into a multi-faceted company known for its expertise in wood and metalwork. What once started as a small, family-run operation has now become a trusted name among architects, builders, and homeowners across the Southeast and beyond.

Today, The Heirloom Companies is made up of three specialized businesses, each carrying forward Allyn’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of custom craftsmanship.

James Moseley Design: Where the Magic Begins

Every project starts with vision. James Moseley Design serves as the creative hub of Heirloom, where concepts take shape and ideas are refined into actionable plans. Sometimes, that means James himself leads the design process, sketching concepts and developing detailed renderings. Other times, it’s about collaboration—working closely with architects, interior designers, and builders to ensure every element of a project is thoughtfully considered and seamlessly integrated.

This collaborative approach allows Heirloom to execute projects that not only reflect their craftsmanship but also honor the designer’s intent and the homeowner’s vision. From grand staircases to custom light fixtures, the design process ensures that every piece is as functional as it is beautiful.

Heirloom Stair & Iron: Crafting Custom Staircases and Railings

Staying true to the company’s origins, Heirloom Stair & Iron focuses on the craftsmanship that first put Heirloom on the map: custom staircases and railings. These aren’t just structural elements—they’re statement pieces, designed to elevate the character of a home.

Each staircase is handcrafted with precision, using only the finest materials. Whether it’s a sweeping, curved staircase in a luxury home or a modern, minimalist design with sleek iron railings, the team approaches every project with the same attention to detail and commitment to quality. The goal is always to create something timeless, something that not only stands the test of time but becomes an integral part of the home’s story.

Hand Forged Designs: Custom Home Furnishings

While staircases remain a core part of Heirloom’s identity, our company’s capabilities have expanded significantly. Hand Forged Designs is where custom home furnishings come to life. This division specializes in one-of-a-kind pieces that truly cannot be found anywhere else.

From striking range hoods that anchor a kitchen to bespoke light fixtures that set the tone for an entryway, each piece is handcrafted with the same dedication to quality that has defined Heirloom from the start. Fire screens, iron doors, and custom furniture are all part of the portfolio, each one designed to fit the unique needs and style of the home it’s made for.

Today, The Heirloom Companies is led by Allyn’s three sons — Ben (Right, COO), James (Middle, Designer), and Travis (Left, Metal Shop Manager) — who have stepped into leadership while honoring the legacy their father built. Together, they continue to push the company forward, combining old-world craftsmanship with modern design and technology.

Though the original barn is gone, the spirit that fueled its early days remains stronger than ever. It’s evident in every project we take on, every piece we craft, and every relationship we build. For the Moseley family and the entire Heirloom team, the mission remains the same: to create lasting, beautiful work that exceeds expectations and stands the test of time.
